But I suppose there's a kind of anthropic principle/selection effect in which people banned by him are unlikely to keep reading him in order to witness him being charitable to anybody.

I haven't found Hoel to be that charitable. He banned philosopher Richard Chappell for pointing out he'd misinterpreted a philosophy paper:
